Roseburg native Richard Helliwell was the forest botanist on the Umpqua
National Forest from 1995 until his retirement in 2022. He has degrees from the University of Maryland
and Southern Oregon State College. Prior to coming to the Umpqua, he was a
botanist for the Ochoco and Mt. Hood National Forests. He also has
experience in forest ecology and ethnobotany with the Warm Springs Indian
Reservation.
